Reality television – really?

Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. Basketball Wives. R&B Divas. Braxton Family Values. TI & Tiny. Tamar & Vince. LaLa’s Full Court Life. Welcome to Sweetie Pies. Mob Wives. Real Housewives of (insert city here).

I had to use Wikipedia to find the names of those shows. I don’t watch em. Every time folks start talking about them, I don’t really join in the conversation. Then when they ask me something, I have to explain – I don’t watch any of those shows. I just don’t. I have enough going on in my life – I don’t have the time to watch shows about other people’s lives. Other people that I could care less about.

Am I anti-social? Probably. Do I think I’m better than everyone else because I don’t watch? Nah. Do I think I’m smarter? Probably  – but that has little to do with why I don’t watch any of the trash…er I mean reality television that people love to watch. I just choose not to watch any of it. It doesn’t entice me. Watching people act a fool isn’t entertaining. That and the majority of it is scripted anyway. I went to school with someone who now writes for a whole bunch of reality shows. We’ve had several discussions at length about how she writes for reality tv shows.

I’ll just stick to my regular shows. NCIS – I love me some Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And at least its fake on purpose.

Tis all…

I guess watching reality shows is the same as reading a book. You do it to get away from your issues, your life at the moment. HOWEVER I do agree people put to much time & energy into it. They get so involved as if they know the celebrities. I admit, I watch RBDivas (LA & ATL) and LHHATL but they don’t consume me. I know the difference between their lives/tv and my life/real world.
I think a lot of times people have this misconception that people who watch the reality shows are ratchet, drama filled, ghetto etc. That’s part of the reason I watch. I’m none of that. I’m a very laid back, educated introvert. It’s entertainment to me. The same way I can read Ashley & Jacquavis or Zane then go read Alice Walker or Joyce Meyers.
I admit some people do take it to far (my 20 y/o cousin) and it consumes them but I don’t think everybody is like that (well I hope not).

    1. For some people, it is consuming. Smh. You raise a valid point – just because you watch, doesn’t mean you are. I wholeheartedly agree! I just go a step (or two or three) further. I don’t even wanna talk about the drama/ratchetness!
